“Hola,

Bienvenida!”

Maggie Steffens

Maggie is a professional water polo player for Team USA and has been chasing her Olympic dream ever since she was a little kid. What was once a mere desire to be an Olympian, indifferent to the sport that actually got her there, has transitioned into one of the most successful careers in the history of the sport of water polo.

Maggie was named to the Women’s National Team in 2009, and has represented the United States at every major international championship competition held annually since. At 19 years old, Maggie was part of the Gold winning squad at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Fun fact, Maggie played alongside her older sister at these Games - talk about a dynamic duo of water polo superstar sisters. In addition to walking away with well-deserved hardware, Maggie was named MVP, and tied the Olympic record for most goals scored at a whopping 21! Four years later, Maggie was named Team Captain for the Rio Olympics, and led Team USA to bringing home Gold for the second Olympic Games in a row. In 2019, Maggie captained the squad that made history after becoming the first team to win three-consecutive FINA World Championship water polo titles. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, Maggie led Team USA to bring home another Gold!

Maggie played collegiately at Stanford University where she accumulated three National Championship titles (2014, 2015 & 2017), an NCAA Tournament MVP and multiple MSPF Player of the Year and ACPWC Player of the Year honors. At Stanford, Maggie received an undergraduate degree in Science, Technology & Society in 2017 and a Masters of Science in Management, Science and Engineering in 2018.

After graduation in 2017, Maggie moved overseas to play professionally in Budapest, Hungary, and then played the following season in Barcelona, Spain. Maggie moved back stateside to Long Beach, CA in the summer of 2019, where she is continuing to train for the next Olympics in Tokyo.

Maggie’s family, a name within itself, is the fuel to her passion and to her values. The youngest of four ambitious and successful siblings, the daughter of a Puerto Rican all-star and a Bay Area native, and part of the legendary aquatic Schnugg family; there is no challenge she can’t face with the support and guidance of her family. She is also very proud of her Puerto Rican heritage and exudes it through her way of life.
